Mission Statement

The music department at BVGS believes that music should be accessible to all and that pupils should be encouraged to express themselves through music. Our aim is to bring people together to gain understanding of different cultures, places and times as well as fostering a sense of community amongst those playing and listening to music together.

Peripatetic Lessons

All pupils are entitled (subject to availability) to a free 20 min instrumental lesson on an instrument of their choice from:
Guitar
Drums
Voice
Woodwind
Strings
Keyboard


Pupils who study music at KS4 or KS5 receive a free half hour lesson in groups no bigger than 2.

Clubs and Ensembles

BVGS has several music ensembles including:

A Samba Band
A singing Group
A Blues Band
An African Drumming Circle.

We play concerts in Bradford and the surrounding area.

KS3

At KS3 pupils learn the elements of music, the key skills of listening, performing, composing and appraising as well as technical skills such as playing the guitar, drums and keyboard. The emphasis is on pupil expression and personalised, independent learning. In years 7 and 8 pupils learn topics such as Samba, African Drumming, Folk Tradition fromm around the world, Calypso, Blues, Rap, Beat Boxing and Hip Hop. In year 9 pupils put these skills to use using the musical futures model.

Year 7 admissions for September 2012 reach record level.
